NSV Goals

There are many days, weeks, months that I don’t see a win on the scale. I’ll stay at a weight for a while, or I’ll put on a few pounds and feel like I’m going backwards. It’s at these moments that I find “non-scale victories” the most rewarding and encouraging. 


Yesterday I checked off a huge NSV. My mom and I completed a 100 mile bike ride. I’m a little sore right now, but looking back on those 9 hours, it was worth it. 

I’ve been training for a few months now with 20-50 mile rides, but I was very nervous for this ride. What if I don’t make it? What if I look foolish? What if it takes me all day? When I was overweight I dreaded even walking a few blocks. I’m still trapped in that mindset sometimes. I forget all that I’ve accomplished, and I forget who I am now.

When I saw that 100 on my Strava app I felt a surge of pride. I’m a new person. I’m free from my unhealthy habits. I don’t need to worry about what I can’t do, and I need to focus on what I can and want to do. Maybe I’ll try that cartwheel soon! 

If you’re on your own weight loss journey start looking for those NSVs. What will inspire you to keep going? If you pass up that donut in the break room give yourself a mental high five. If you fit into your jeans a little better that’s a sign of progress. Even if those numbers on the scale don’t move or move in the other direction just think that you’re making a positive change in your life. And remember, muscle weighs more than fat!
