This past weekend I had the privilege of going on WISN 12 to promote the app that saved my life: LoseIt!
I am not a paid employee of the app LoseIt! I’m not affiliated with them aside from being a grateful user of their service. I don’t want you to think that I’m trying to convince you to buy into my pyramid scheme or a product I’m selling. I don’t benefit in any way from you using LoseIt! (The exclamation mark is part of their brand. Even though I’m excited about their product, I’m not that emphatic in my writing)
In November 2015 I decided to make a change in my life. My son was a year old then, and gone were the days of sitting around with an immobile diaper machine. He was starting to crawl faster and on the verge of being a regular walker.
I had known for many years that I needed to lose weight. Friends hinted at. People made comments behind my back. When one coworker got scolded for referencing my weight he said, “What? He has mirrors.” I had tried several diets in the past, and I gave up on them before I really even started. They were all too much work. Too much money. Too much sacrifice.
I was nearing 400 pounds, and I was wearing 4-5XL clothing. I was uncomfortable physically and emotionally. I didn’t like being in pictures, and I always assumed people were staring at me or talking about me. I couldn’t fit into a student desk at school. I was terrified of folding chairs, and I would often opt to stand rather than sweat through something because of the panic when the chair would inevitably creak under my weight.
A friend told me about the app LoseIt! and on a whim I downloaded it and entered in my information. Then I logged my calories for the day. As the day went on I thought, well, I’ll keep this up and see what happens. Even on that first day I started to change my eating habits. In the afternoon I decided, I’d rather not eat that donut because if I eat that then I won’t be able to eat something later. When later came I decided to not drink that soda because it was a waste of calories when I could have the slice of cake at home. I ate plenty, I felt full, and I came in under what LoseIt said I could eat.
A year and a half later I still use the app everyday for every meal. When I first started I entered everything. If it went in my mouth I plugged it into the app. I created dozens of recipes in the app so that my numbers would be more accurate. I opted for the 2 pounds a week plan because it was the most aggressive plan they offered. I was shocked at how many calories I was given. Some days it was hard for me to intake as many calories as I was afforded. I paid close attention to how much protein and fat I was consuming, and I entered in as much movement as I could.
I saw results right away. Not only was I losing weight, I was learning, finally, how to be healthy. I had to learn what a serving size was. I measured foods. I weighed foods. I wanted to be accurate in my data. It turned into a game with myself. With LoseIt! I didn’t have to worry about being judged by other people. I didn’t have to be accountable to a trainer. On days when I over consumed the only person who knew was me. I felt comfortable tracking my food because no one else could see my data.
Overall I’ve lost 170 pounds. I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life. It’s not just the weight loss that’s a success, it’s the healthier lifestyle. I make better food choices now. I feel satisfied with what I’m eating. I’ve gone from a 4XL to a slim fit large. A size 22 tall dress shirt was tight, and I needed to wear extra long ties. Now, in some brands I’m even a medium. For over a decade stores like the Gap were unattainable. I would walk right past them. Their XXL barely fit over my arm. Now they are one of my favorite stores.
If you’re looking to get healthy I’d recommend trying LoseIt. It’s easy. It’s free. It’s quick. If you really want to get more information on your food choices or want fitness plans they do have a premium version that’s less than the cost of a month of your cable bill.
With LoseIt you don’t have to give up the foods you love. You can still eat pizza and ice cream and chips. If you do start using the app be honest in what you enter. Don’t cheat yourself by trying to hide your food. No one is looking over your shoulder judging you. Be honest. Try it for a week and enter everything you put into your mouth. Even if you don’t stick with it you’ll get an idea of your eating habits. Everyone I’ve known who had faithfully used the app has seen positive results. If you don’t, well, all you’ve invested is a few minutes of your time.
I never thought that I would be promoting a weight loss tool. I had given up on losing weight before I tried LoseIt. It’s crazy to type all of this because I never would have dreamed I’d be where I am today.
